Vertical Blue 2016 is the 9th edition of the world’s most elite freediving competition. It was held April 22-May 2, 2016 at Dean’s Blue Hole, Long Island, Bahamas – the deepest Blue Hole in the world (663 feet), and the second largest underwater chamber. Swell and wind don’t reach inside the Hole, and visibility is usually between 30-100 feet.
This year 35 freedivers from 20 countries took the plunge in three different disciplines: constant weight (CWT), free immersion (FIM) and constant no-fins (CNF). The competition had an incredible 36 National Records and 3 World Records.
The Vertical Blue Medical and Safety Team is sponsored by Masimo. Dr. Stig Severinsen, four-time freediving world champion and holder of the Guinness Book of World Records for an underwater breath hold (22 minutes), monitored blood oxygenation, pulse rate and other parameters throughout the competition using a MightySat. The data he recorded was sent to our research team.
